Event proceeds from UCA-sanctioned race help provide bikes to Utah second graders

SALT LAKE CITY – July 7, 2011 -
Bikes for Kids Utah today announced details of 2011 Bikes for Kids Stage Race, a two-day, three-stage event Friday and Saturday, August 5-6 in Herriman, Utah. The race, a Utah Cycling Association (UCA) points race, will include a criterium, road race and time trial.  The race is sanctioned under USA Cycling (held under permit #2011-2303).

“Having the only UCA stage race in the Salt Lake Valley is fantastic for Bikes for Kids; it’s a great opportunity for riders from across the Wasatch Front to compete close to home while supporting a great local cause,” said Race Director Alex Kim. “We are very excited about the three race courses that have been carefully created to suit everyone from first-time racers to seasoned pros.”

In addition to USA Cycling and UCA points, racers will be competing for more than $2,000 in cash, winners’ jerseys and prizes.

All proceeds from this stage race will go to support Bikes for Kids Utah’s mission to provide 1,000 second graders from Utah with new bicycles each year.  This year’s stage race is expected to build on the very successful UCA University of Utah/Bikes for Kid’s Omnium that was held in 2010. This year will also feature a short children’s fun ride on the closed criterium course.

The Stage 1 Criterium will be held Friday, August 5th in the afternoon on a closed course around the Silver Crest Elementary School in Herriman. The following morning, the Stage 2 Road Race will be conducted on a circuit on Herriman City and Salt Lake County roads.  On the afternoon of Saturday, August 6, racers will complete their overall standings with a short, but challenging Stage 3 Time Trial.  Winners will be awarded in each stage as well as by their placing in the general classification, which is determined by the sum of the overall time in all three stages and any time bonuses awarded.

Entry fees range from $50 for Junior racers to $95 for Category Pro 1-2 racers, and online registration closes Wednesday, August 3.
